What is SPF?

Sun Protection Factor or SPF is a measure of the degree to which your skin is protected from sunburn - which is why all sunscreen products have a SPF number. This number tells you how long the sun's UV radiation would take to affect your skin as opposed to the amount of time without any sunscreen. For example, with SPF 30, it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you weren't wearing any sunscreen.

The Different Types of SPF

There are two types of sunscreen, physical and chemical. Physical sunscreen contains physical blockers which create a barrier that reflects and scatters UV rays away from the skin, while chemical sunscreen is composed of chemical filters that cause a reaction with the sun’s UVA and UVB rays and convert it to heat that is not harmful to the skin. Both types of sunscreen are safe and effective.
